Utkal Diwas or Utkal Divas is celebrated to remember the day that the government made the announcement that the state of Odisha would be established; this date was April 1st, 1936. Historically, Odisha was a region that belonged to the province of Bihar and Orissa. Subsequently, the region became a sovereign state following significant revolutionary efforts that continued for a period of thirty years.
History of Formation of the Odisha State
Utkal Diwas 2023. On April 1, 1936, Odisha was formed as the first inter-linguistic state. On this occasion, Utkal Day is celebrated throughout the state to pay tribute to the son of Oriya or Odia.
After almost five hundred years of being fragmented in a borderless, casteless and languageless state, Odisha came together. This state was once known for its art-culture, language-literature, trade-business and socio-military tradition.
First its freedom and then social security, language and culture were destroyed due to multiple reasons. After the shrinking of its geographical boundaries, the non-Orthodox, influencing the then British government, proposed to divide it into pieces. Even in some Bengali publications, Odia is not a separate language or a race, therefore it is not recognized as a separate province, but it is suggested to be included in the Bengali-speaking region.
However, against their conspiracy Utkalgaurab Madhusudan Das, Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das, Maharaja Sriramchandra Bhanjdeo, Captain Baskabi Fakirmohan , Pandit Nilgok Das, poet Radhanath Ray, Maharaja Krishnachandra Gajapati Deva, nature poet Gangadhar Meher, Bichitrananda Das, Karmbir Gaurishkhan Ray and Harihar Mardaraj Deva led the voice of protest.
Finally freed from the shackles of independence, a separate Odisha was born. This is the most significant event in the history of modern Odisha. This was the final result of Odisha’s renaissance that began in the 19th century. Symbolically, it was the declaration of Odisha’s independence.
