In every state and some union territory in India, there is a legislative body known as the State Legislative Assembly, or Vidhan Sabha, often referred to as Vidhana Sabha or Saasana Sabha. There is only one legislative body, a unicameral legislature, in 22 states and 3 union territories. The State Legislative Council is the upper house of bicameral legislatures of six states, while the legislative assembly is the lower house. There is no legislative body in the five union territories, which are directly under the control of the Indian Union Government.
