However, for the sake of administrative convenience, the Undivided Dhenkanal District was divided into two parts, namely Dhenkanal and Angul, via State Government Notification No. DRC-44/93/14218/R. dated 27 March 1993. This allowed the District of Dhenkanal to be divided On April 1, 1993, the Angul District was officially established as its own separate district.

List of Tourist, Picnic & Beautiful Places in Angul District

  • Rengali-At Rengali, a dam has been built in the middle of the Brahmani River. One 120 MW hydroelectric power project has been put in place here. It is about 85 kilometres from Angul, on N.H. Rengali, in a beautiful area, and is a good spot for a group picnic.Angul is accessible via bus for those interested. The distance between Angul and Rengali is approximately 85 kilometres. There is a consistent bus service that runs between Angul and Rengali. There is also a frequent bus service available from Talcher, which is around 65 kilometres away from Rengali.
  • Kosala Ramachandi Temple – On Angul-Bagedia road, this templeis 28 km away. The village’s Ramchandi shrine is famous. She has extraordinary powers. Ramchandi or Kaduali Yatra is this Yatra (July- August). This Yatra is celebrated annually. Yatra draws thousands. Kosala is 28 Kms away from Angul. Buses and trains both provide access to Angul. From Angul, one can take a bus that travels on a consistent schedule to get to Kosala.
  • Deulajhari, Athamallik-Deuajhari is the ancient citadel of Saivism, located at 6 Km away from Athamallik and 90 Km away from Angul. The presiding deity Sidheswara Baba adores the main Temple. Angul is located 90 kilometres distant from Deulajhari, but Athamallik is located only 6 kilometres away. From either Angul or Athamallik, one can take a bus to cross the distance to go to Deulajhari.
  • Lovi Thakurani, Garh Santry-On the dayof Kartik Purnima, the Lovi Thakurani yatra begins in which is a yearly religious procession honouring the goddess Lovi. Angul is accessible via bus for those interested. Angul is located 17 kilometres away from Lovi Thakurani, Garh Santry.
  • Goddess Hingula – The sacred site of the Goddess Hingula may be found in the western part of what was was the Talcher Estate and is now the Angul District. It is located on the bank of the Simhada River. There is regular bus/auto service to Hingula Pitha, Gopal Prasad from Talcher & Angul which is about 30 & 23 KMs respectively.
  • Saila Srikhetra, Angul-The Jagannath Temple at Angul is known as “Saila Srikhetra” situated on the top of Sunasagad hill. It is about 160 km from the state capital and has good road connections. The temple is on the top of Sunasagad Hill, next to the National Highway.
